I am completely surprised how much I enjoyed this book. I was not a Donny fan as a kid. But he and I are about the same age, and now as a new senior, I have come to respect and admire his ethics and choices. He was very candid about his near life-long struggle to accept himself. His family and church helped ground him, of course, but at the same time they also kept him on a very narrow path, and he was not always thrilled with the boundaries. But he refused to abandon either, even for show, in order to further his career or up his street cred. That is difficult even for those of us not living our lives in the spot light.

The book was exceedingly well written. The pages turned easily. There was no preaching or proselytizing. Donny has the last laugh (in my opinion, not that he would phrase it thusly), in that he has a solid 40-year marriage, kids who adore him, and a career that just keeps pumping along, all on his own terms. As an adult, I am fan now of the person he has become. Take a chance on this book, fan or not. You will not be disappointed.
