I really enjoyed this book. It is not a religious story, but a history of the times. The author even states that this is "not a book about Jesus". That said, there are frequent references to Bible text, which is used as a reference as well as other early texts. There are numerous humorous footnotes. It is like reading two books in one, following the references and the regular story, which is a fascinating look at how the contemporaries of Jesus lived and worked.
