I bought this book because it was Chekhov, not that I ever intended to read it. Wrong! Two weeks later I read it in an afternoon; I could not put it down. Incidentally, it is not a strict autobiography (although there is some basis); it is actually a novella about class attitudes and personal identity in 19th century Russia. This is one more facet of a great writer.
