Lifecraft: The Art of Meaning in the Everyday
Lifecraft The Art of Meaning in the Everyday Author:F. Forrester Church, Forrest Church In Lifecraft, Forrest Church challenges much of the modern search for meaning--indeed, the entire thrust of modern theology. Lifecraft reminds us that if we look at our lives as a whole (a spiritual goal many of us have never questioned), "when things go wrong, the entire screen turns dark." Instead, the author says,"Imagine your life as a serie... more »s of works in progress presented daily at a craft fair. Each day's exhibits present an overlapping series of projects--the child project, the parent project, the love project, the vocation project, the justice project, even the God project." Lifecraft challenges us to imagine ourselves as "a consortium of personae," rather than as a fixed identity--because otherwise, Church says, we will inevitably think either too much or too little of ourselves. Church looks at Princess Diana's life and death to show how character and plot can often diverge, in creatively affirming ways; and he turns to the great art forms to suggest paths for our search for meaning. Thornton Wilder's Our Town, he says, reminds us that we are who we love. "A spiritual Guide for grown-ups--this book doesn't pander and it doesn't apologize: it is simple and wise." - Joanne Woodward "Graceful, elegant, and accessible, Lifecraft offers a provocative and exhilarating meditation on life's biggest questions." - Tony Schwartz, author of What Really Matters "Ultimately what emerges from the pages is an aura of intellectual and emotional decency." - Theodore Bikel« less
