This came yesterday in an email from a friend of mine who owns a B&B. I worked for her for a couple of seasons & I can tell you that this conversation pretty much went like she said....and she said she wouldn't mind me sharing it with you all.
Enjoy!
Guest at breakfast wants directions to shopping in other towns. Of course, I
recommend Saugatuck, just 15 minutes north, great artistic shops, etc.
She says, in front of the entire dining room of breakfast diners: "But
I heard that Saugatuck has really changed!".
Now this is true: it's dumbed down a bit and not really as classy as
it used to be, but I ask her anyway: "Oh? Changed in what way?"
She says, exact quote:
"I heard it was overtaken by homosexuals."
Total silence, not even *chewing* in the dining room at this point.
I say: "Saugatuck has been a gay community for about 30 years. But
they didn't actually parachute down in a military coup, it was more
gradual than that."
Snuffled gasps in the dining room.
She says: "Well, I wouldn't want to go to a homosexual community."
I can't resist, probably because I have a rapt audience at this point.
I say: "Well, you don't need to be concerned. It's not contagious."
Her husband laughs it all off and changes the subject immediately.
In the meantime, in the kitchen, my staff is pretending to be komakaze
gays invading Saugatuck by parachute from German dogfight planes.
Instead of saying "Geronimo!" or whatever, they say, high voice and lilting:
"It looks FABulous from up here!"!! LOL!
