This book was categorized as a romance, and does have an HEA, but is extremely dark. The author has woven Brothers Grimm fairy tale concepts through a plot that wouldn't have held up otherwise.

This is not a book for the squeamish, or those who don't like their romances darker than dark.

I thought it was well done.

Wow, this book had me on the edge of my seat the whole time, it was dark and moody. However, it was also past paced and kept me reading. If you have read the "Kushiel's" books, you'll appreciate the subtlety in Schwabs writing. I flinched at the moregraphic scenes in the book. The characters are tortured by the events of the past and neither know how to redeem or forgive themselves.

Troy Sacheverell, fifthe Earl of Ravenhurst, was captured in France. He had gone to fight Napoleon, but what he found was much more sinister. Dragged from prison to an old French manor on the outskirts of civilization, he was purchased by a rich and twisted widow. But more dangerous the beauty who claimed him. Lillian wished to flee Camille, her stepmohter, but none escaped the Black Widow's web. And on her nineteenth birthday, Lillian became her heir. Her gift was a plaything: a man to end her naivete, a man perfect in all ways. Reluctantly Lillina did as told, marked his flesh and branded it with the flower of her name. As she did, she saw there was no place to run. No matter if she should flee, no matter where she might go, she and this man were prisioners of passion.

Historical Romance. Lillian finally escapes the clutches of her sadomasochistic stepmother, who is trying to groom Lily in her own image. In London, she meets up with the man she left behind...and who blames her for his ordeals. Can they overcome thier history, and have they truly escaped? Good book, but Castle of the Wolf is better.
