This book has a really interesting plot, although there was a bit more filler than necessary. The case Scudder is investigating had him baffled for quite some time, as there was no apparent motive. But I'm still a bit uncertain how Scudder arrived at the identity of the killer. The ending was unlike any I've found in other mysteries.

However, Block did make one historical mistake. Most people probably wouldn't realize what it was. In fact, it was only after finishing the book I realized what it was. This was because the mistake was something I was personally aware of in the '60s. But to explain it here would be to give away the identity of the killer. I believe the mistake was only mentioned once in the book and only after Scudder figured out who the killer was.

This large print book is 480 pages long, but the pages just flew by.
