This story is the weakest in this series; Jane Devereaux still lives in her home with her brother, Julian. He has suddenly upped and married an eighteen-year old waspish ninny who wants Jane to marry and go somewhere else. As her brother is also hateful, Jarvis House is an uncomfortable abode.

Jane is a Bluestocking with few prospects, when Lord Payne asks her to pretend to be his betrothed until the end of the Season. When Julian tries to palm her off on an old Vicar, Jane agrees to James Payne's entreaty.

Jane thought herself in love with scientist Alistair Jackson. However, he asked her to wait for him for five years while he toured the Americas (last book). Jane refused but Jackson almost died and has returned after losing some toes to infection.

This book was not asd well written as past novels. The sudden transformation of the eighteen-year old sister-in-law was pitiful (it didn't fit in a book this short). The editing was terrible; did Jackson lose two or three toes? There were an excessive number of typos. Overall score = G+.
