I'm a big Darren Shan fan and Lord Loss was the first book I read by him. It's marketed for children and young adults and written in a style that might turn off some older readers. However, it really should be in the young adult and older category--I wouldn't recommend this for Darren Shan's younger fans who discovered him via the Cirque du Freak books. Lord Loss is one of the most well-written and disturbing bad guys in modern Horror. The Gore Factor is high and the young hero has really been through a heart wrenching tragedy. May give young children nightmares.
That being said, my fiance and I are in our mid-30s and we love the Demonata series! Darren Shan offers a fresh, creative world. Both the Demonata and Cirque du Freak series are great.

Both my son & I read this one. It is not as awful as the title leads you to believe. I've also read the second and third ones and am waiting for the fourth one. However, it is only for those who don't mind the macabre (sp?)--probably at least pre-teen level.

The whole story came together beautifully for a GREAT ending. This book is now one of my all-time favorites. Toward the middle I thought the author was wandering a bit, and right as I was about to say screw it and start another book it all came together and it was all uphill from there. This book had one of, if not the best endings I have ever read (I read about 5 books a month)!
