Claire is a Fedeal judge overseeing the trial of one very big drug dealer. Claire is married to one of the most well known attorneys in the country. Claire is 8 months pregnant with their first child. Claire is grabbed off the street, a hood thrown over her face and dragged into a white van and taken to an unknown destination.

Claire's husband, Billy Manchester, immediately calls Max Freeman, who does investigative work for him after leaving the Philadelphia police department. Max has his own demons and is known as a bulldog, one that doesn't always respond well to doing the correct thing.... he does whatever is required to get the job done.

Residing now in Florida, Max takes us for a thrilling adventure, ending in the Glades. Never having been there, I'm not sure I would feel safe there ... alligators and swamps notwithstanding.

The story gets told from different sides. We know from Diane how frightening it must be to be that far along in pregnancy and unable to see what's going on around her, depending on her hearing to keep her sane. She knows there are people around her but they never speak.

We see Max and Billy working together, pulling in favors, contacting the deep underbelly of the drug business. And we get to see how the police bungle along the way.

The book never explodes for me ... it's more a constant thrum of nerves running underneath all the action. There are drug dealers and other unsavory characters along the way. There are greasy politicians and swamp people who live on the very edge of society.

It's been awhile since I read the first two books in this series. I will definitely go back and try to get caught up. I really like the characters and how they interact with each other.
