A very interesting story about a Jewish, Polish family; that immigrates to Michigan. Max, the grandson tells the story about Gootie, his grandmother. Sometimes she is quite quirky in her ways, she holds on to her Polish ways. She lives in America, but really isn't American in a sense that most Americans are. Her way of doing things are 'her way' of doing things, the way she has always done things, the old way. The story can be sad in it's own way, and yet it is funny, too. Max is a good storyteller, the book is filled with stories he tells of his family. One story is about his grandfather who works as a baker. I learned some interesting facts about pumpernickel bread. The book is an enjoyable read; a good biography, filled with special stories.
