I loved this book! I have read a number of this author's books and this one is far and away my favourite. WWII England. It follows a family in Plymouth from the start of the war to about 10 years after. The first half is a snapshot of life on the homefront for a woman, Lucy, and her three children while her husband is in the British Navy, and later captured by the Japanese, a POW for 4 years. The author's depiction of the bombing that Plymouth sustained is some of the most vivid writing about the Blitz I've ever read. She transported me there. The second half of the book begins with the return of Lucy's husband from the prisoner of war camp, how he is forever changed by the experience and the difficulty the family has coping with a beloved member of the family that they no longer know. In the end, it is a triumphant book and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in life in Britain during and after WWII.
