The theme of the book is love. Love in all its aspects-between man and woman, parent and child, friend and friend, individual and community. It is an examination of the rewards and the burdens-sometimes crushing burdens-laid on people possessed by love. And like all really first-rate novels, it is an exploration of moral responsibility.
