Beati pm ci. -- PREFATORY NOTE. -- CANNOT fend forth this volume without placing ... more »on record my great obligations, and heartieit thanks, to all thofe whofe valued and truly-prized con tri butions have made it what it is. This I now do. Planned more than ten years ago, and put aGde for Some time by other and more prefling duties, it has been to me at once an agreeable relaxation and a very great leafure, from time to time, to fecure from many friends and others the various Chriftiail Lyrics which follow,-for which I here expreii my fincere acknowledgments. I feel deeply honoured by having been permitted to gather and arrange such a poetical pofy and this from fo many who have won their laurels. Two of the contributors, whofe memories are frequently before me, my old and dear friend the Rev. John Purchas, and Mr. Mackworth Dolben, of Finedon Hall,-a young writer of intenfe refinement, deep fpirituality, and great promife, who met an untimely death, have paffed away from Gght and ken. The poems of there writers may be all the more valued, therefore, becaufe with them the pen has been laid down, the hand is cold, and the heart is fiill. Prefatory Note. I have only to add that no author is refponfible for anything more than his own contribution. F. G. L. All Saints Vicarage, Lambeth, Nwember 4, I 8 74. NOTE TO THE SECOND EDITION. T is a fource of fatisfallion to me that a book which appealed neither to the ordinary multitude nor to commonplace taites, has fo Coon reached a fecond edition. This, having been carefully revifed, only differs from the firit in that it contains eleven new poems. To the refpeEtive authors of there I tende my fincere acknowledgments. Since its publication three more of the original contributors have paired onward to the life beyond the grave-Mr. Hawker, the Vicar of Morwenitow Father Cafwall, of the Birmingham Oratory, and Dr. Monfell.
