I read this today to a first grade class, when I read the line "and at the tiger at the zoo, Madeline merely said "pooh pooh!"" I lost the class for about 10 minutes.

Funny, I spend a lot of my time teaching 1st graders about 10s groups (2 groups of 5), then along comes 12 girls in 2 straight lines. What's a digital theoritition to do?

Synopsis
With one of the most well known and lovely opening sentences in all of children's literature ("In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines"), MADELINE is an unforgettable picture book about a truly unforgettable character. This story, the first in a series of books about Madeline, introduces readers to life at the French boarding school run by a kindly nun named Miss Clavel. Although she is dedicated to all her students, Miss Clavel must pay special attention to the activities of her youngest charge, a feisty girl named Madeline. Here Madeline faces an emergency visit to the hospital to have her appendix removed. Color paintings, which depict such Parisian landmarks as the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and the Luxembourg Gardens, accompany the rhyming text. MADELINE is a 1940 Caldecott Honor Book.

The inside Cover Reads:

Madeline needs no introduction. The story about Miss Clavel's twelve little girls in Paris is a childhood classic.
"mr. Bemelmans' drawings of the Opera, of Notre Dame in the rain, of the sun shining on birds and children in the Luxembourg and Tuileries gardens have put an authentic Paris within the covers of this book. The rhymes in which the tale is told make it one that children will enjoy repeating."
