I just noticed that using the PBS postage sends the books first class and not media mail... has it been like this the whole time?

It depends on the weight of the book...with printable postage it will determine the least expensive shipping option.

I'm assuming that with the smaller books, since sometimes First Class is cheaper than media mail, that it did that by default. Cuz I posted a big hardcover and it automatically did media mail...

The default used to be media mail, and now it has changed to first class. That's a problem for me, too, since I send everything in a bubble wrap envelope, so my packages weigh more. I don't have a scale at home, sadly. Wish they hadn't made this particular change. Carol Ann

If first class is only a few cents more than MM it will give you first class. Also I think media mail went up recently and many lighter PBs will ship FC for $1.98.  I had 2 books to mail and when I added the weight for the 2nd it changed from FC to MM.

Also posted this info in the "First Class Mail" thread....

First Class is cheaper for up to 6 ounces (1.98).  At 7 ounces it is 2.15, so I will usually still use first class since it is only 2 cents more.  8 ounces or over it goes to media mail.

Also, PBS bases its weight on their "wrapper" system, so if you mail using bubble mailers or boxes, you may get a different result.  I've noticed that a couple of times, but I'm pretty sure its because of the bubble mailer I use.  (I use bubble mailers and print my own labels with postage via Paypal.)

The system offers whichever class of mail is cheaper, but pay attention to the weight they are giving for your book.  The last couple of books I've sent have had very low weights given.  One was listed as being under 2 ounces (!), even though it was a pretty standard mass-market PB.  Even when I corrected the weight, it still listed an incorrect amount of postage.  Do make sure you check the weight of your book, especially when sending First Class.

I think it only goes to first class when it's cheaper(up to 6 ounces--7 ounces is $2.15).  Media mail is $2.13 up to 1 lb.

For those using bubble mailers, just weigh one (perhaps a rec'd one w/ tape) and add that weight to the default weight for that book, and it will recalculate the postage before you before it prints the wrapper.
