First of all, this is not your typical light Regency in the style of Georgette Heyer. It's quite different, and I loved that difference. It works well as a standalone, although characters from previous stories figure prominently. The historical detail is rich, giving an authentic feel to the era's social mores, society's structure and demands.

The characters are flawed and the situations dealt with are timeless â such as infidelity, betrayal, a questioning faith, etc. I loved that it starts with marriage instead of courtship, for Julia and Thomas have some seemingly insurmountable obstacles to overcome. Forgiveness, second chances, and redemption are beautifully reflected throughout. Another great story by Carolyn Miller!
