They thought he was just a cat! When Oscar arrived at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rhode Island, he was a cute little guy with attitude. Apparently, this ordinary cat possessed an extraordinary gift. He knew when the end of life was near. Oscar was a welcome distraction for the residents of Steere House, many of whom were living with Alzheimer's. But he never spent much time with them, until they were in their last hours. Then, as if it were his job, Oscar would stride purposely into a patient's room, curl up on the bed, and begin his vigil. Oscar provided comfort and companionship when people needed him most. And his presence let caregivers and loved ones know that it was time to say good-bye. Oscar's gift was a tender mercy! He taught by example: embracing moments of life that so many of us shy away from! Good book!
