Aka âHigh Commandâ in the USA

Masters is one of my favorite contemporary authors. In this, his last novel, he traces the career of a British officer from WWI through the Spanish Civil War, service in India, to the early days of WWII, as he aspires to attain a general officer's command: thus the US title âHigh Command.â This novel lacks the action in his âLoss of Eden Trilogy;â it is closer the Evelyn Waugh's âSword of Honor Trilogy.â Here he presents all of the tedium of peacetime (if one can refer to the 1920s and 1930s as such) interspersed with an incomplete recounting of armed conflict. I found some difficulty following the time sequence, as he time warps constantly back and forth between 1919 and 1940. A table of chapter titles might have helped.
