It's strange that an Englishman becomes so fascinated by wolves. Yet Shawn Ellis grew up hearing wolf stories depicted as dangerous animals that could harm children. A lonely child, he spent hours with dogs and observing forest animals with his grandfather.

His fascination with wolves grew through observing captive animals in his home country. Working with them, he began to wonder how they differed from those living in the wild. To find out, he looked at the U.S. where he found the Nez Perce to teach him. Once there, he found himself at odds with scientists who studied wolves. How, he thought, could one learn simply by observation? Contrary to their recommendations, he decided to try living within a wolf pack. So he did, living months within a pack where he adopted their behaviors as close as he could. What he learned is much more than mere observation could provide. His Nez Perce friends told him that he had a foot in two worlds - human and wolf.

As understanding grew, he shared experiences in"Living With The Wolfman," a television series. The down side was that personal relationships with loved ones suffered.. He preferred wolves over people. It is unsettling that a man would leave family to live with wolves, adopting their actions, even eating what they ate. As the lowest ranking in the pack he ate the least desirable parts of the animals the pack killed.

With the knowledge he accumulated he strived and continues to help wolves and men live beside each other. At one point, he went to Poland to help farmers discourage wolves that were attacking livestock He used recordings of wolves to simulate a rival pack which worked. Of course, this book is a result of his experiences, too. Most interesting read.
