Set in the murky, stinking slums of Victorian England, the characters are not very appealing nor maybe not even very nice. The story does highlight the Victorian male's patronizing disbelief in female intelligence. The police are portrayed as inept and willing to quickly close their murder cases without much investigating or forensics. Lots of red herrings among the clues kept me reading until the end when the killer was revealed.
