Do these need to be read in order? I picked up a couple and realized I have #2 and #5 or something like that. Do they have a continuing story or can they be read independantly?

(I know I ask this question a lot lately-but I pick up books and then realize they are in the middle of a series)

While each book can be read as a stand alone, I think things would make more sense to you if you read them in order. There is a continuing background plot and some of the stories will make more sense if you are familiar with the information from previous books.
