Book 2 in the Masquerade Club series, the others being A Reputation for Notoriety and A Lady of Notoriety. The setting is a gambling club in 1819 London. Lady Philippa Westleigh has a scarred face from a childhood accident; she believes that the scar is not just the first thing people see about her, but the *only* thing. Mr. Xavier Campion, whom she had known from childhood, is jawdroppingly handsome but used to his looks and not vain about them. Philippa's mother is hellbent on finding her a husband, and not above using cruel restrictions to achieve her purpose. Xavier is pursued by Lady Faville, now a widow, who has convinced herself that he is still in love with her. A journey of self knowledge awaits Philippa.

Good read.
