Good read, mostly held my interest well all the way through. Major Stratton used to be the second cutest guy around (his younger brother being the more charming of the two), then he came back from the wars wounded and scarred, and with his honor tarnished. But he was expected to just "get over it and get on with it". Which was unrealistic even then. He meets Emma again, a girl whose first love he was, and she hasn't changed her feeling for him, but it's a long way back.

The sequel (the brother's story) is Rake's Reward.
