Danna Campbell is undoubtedly in a nontraditional role in this story. She is the town marshal. That usually is enough to compel me to toss the book in the trash (I'm not too fond of books that cast women in nontraditional roles to make them more 2020-compliant). However, there was something more to this story.
Danna inherited the job after her husband died after being shot in the back. However, no local men would work with her, and she was doing things alone. Danna has a backstory that fits with this tale. Danna's parents died early, leaving her with a slightly older brother. He was clueless about taking care of a sister and married her off to his best friend. Danna thought she was foisted off on another because her brother didn't want her. They haven't spoken in years.
Chas O'Grady is a detective working on a case of cattle rustling. But he needs a cover for walking around and asking questions about missing cattle, so Chas offers to become Danna's deputy.
