Mary Anne gets a chain letter and tempts bad luck by throwing it away and breaking the chain. Not wanting their luck to get worse, Mary Anne wears it. Will they figure things out before anything REALLY bad happens?
And as Halloween draws near, Jessi helps Jamie Newton become a little less afraid of costumes; Kristy has to deal with her younger siblings' fears about the spooky holiday. The best moment in the book - A bird has gotten into the Pike house and been shooed out a window. Claire Pike, noting that the bird came in via the chimney, asks "I wonder if the bird knows Santa Claus." Funny!
