I first learned of Mary Edwards Walker when I read a book about Belva Lockwood. Mary was a contemporary of hers and was described as eccentric and also a woman physician who served in the Civil War. I became curious and wanted to learn more about her. I think this book did a great job of describing her life, and the book is smaller and easier to read then some of the thick biographies out on people. It really gave me another aspect of the Civil War from this woman's perspective and experiences. She was obviously very brave and persistent, though she started out life very timid and physically small in stature. I highly recommend it.
