Buchan alludes to the massacre of the Glencoe clan in his other novels of this period in Scottish history: the Covenanting and the Jacobite uprising. As in his other historical romances, it is replete with descriptions of the countryside and name dropping of places and towns that will send you screaming for a map. This non-fiction account is a document of the turmoil, not only of the era, but of clan jealousies and loyalties that were rampant in the north.
