Beginning in the mid-1980's, a renewed commitment was made to students majoring in social sciences and humanities. "Quantitative Literacy" was recognized as essential in an increasing number of professional fields as well as in the daily decision-making and communication of informed citizens. Professional associations recommended that courses do more than equip students for their next mathematics course. As a result, new liberal arts mathematics courses have been developed, courses that include rich and interesting mathematical content that motivates students, develops their mathematical self-confidence, and helps them grow as they prepare for their lives as professionals and informed members in of society. This textbook is designed as a textbook for such a course. Throughout the book, we have sought to be faithful to recommendations of professional organizations such as the MAA, AMATYC, and NCTM.« less
