I enjoyed this book very much. It always amazes me what people can overcome. Walter Anderson experienced horrible physical and emotional abuse inside his home growing up, yet grew into a sensitive, smart and accomplished adult. It inspires me to read that his growth into a trusting and confident person was far from an overnight occurance--in fact it was a constant life-long struggle to dicipline himself, to fight again and again the demons that constantly rose up to confront him. Turning his rage into positive action was what saved him and that is a good lesson for many of us.
The book was not overly long which I appreciated very much (especially in memoirs which too often are bulky, wordy 4-500 page doorstops). He described the most memorable scenes of his life in un-fussy yet raw and emotional terms, and always the story moved forward. I recommend thi book highly, especially if you have grappled with obstancles of your own. And who hasn't? ***1/2 Three and a half stars.
