I went to the post office to mail a book (smaller in size) and it was $.02 more for first class compared to media mail.   The person at the post office said since the new rates came out this year (2007) the postage is rated differently, so it is a good idea to check out the rates.  I sent the book first class and the receiver should have it about 8-10 days sooner.

It's a good thing to keep an eye on!  I use this http://postcalc.usps.gov/ from USPS, and just pop in the weight in ounces along with the zip codes, and it gives several postal rates and estimated delivery times.

yup, those lightweight books can be sent for less or just $0.02 more.  although my media mail books have been getting there within a week, sometimes as fast as first class.

I mailed 3 books the other day at the post office.  Two were 2 cents more for first class, one was only 21 cents more.  I sent them all first class, and they all arrived in 3 or 4 days, even the one that went from VA to CA.  I think in the future for smaller books, I'll skip DC and send first-class instead -- it will be cheaper and faster, although I won't get quick or guaranteed credit from PBS.

Up to 7 oz. it is 2.33 to send it First Class with electr. DC. I usually prefer to send FC than. Only 2 Cents more compared to Media Mail with 2.31 + elec. DC The only thing to consider is the thickness.

I've had fast luck with media lately! A member mailed me a book last Saturday from Indiana and I got it on Monday!  Two other members sent books to me Friday and I got them on Monday as well...one from Va and one from somewhere in New England. On the other hand, someone who lives 3 hours from me sent me a book 15 days ago and I've yet to get it!  Funny how delivery times an be so different!
