I recently renewed my membership for another year. I am paid through April 11, 2020 :) Before I renewed, my membership for this year was due to expire on April 12th of this year. My question is why did I lose a day? The only explanation I can come up with is that 2020 is a leap year (thus there will be 366 days next year instead of typical 365. And April, of course, comes after February 29--Leap Day). I don't think this matters at all, but I did choose to renew at the Limited level rather than Standard which is what I had.

I am just curious, this is no biggie. I did contact PBS and will post back on here their reply. Was wondering if anyone else has experienced this when renewing this year. Thank you :)

Have a good night. God Bless You.

You didn't lose a day.  The year, whether it's a regular year or a leap year, ends on the day BEFORE the beginning of the next year.  So if you paid for a year on January 1, your year would end on Dec 31 -- Jan 1 is the beginning of the year and the beginning of the next year...  So your year begins on April 12 and ends on April 11.  Next year starts April 12 -- no days are missed.

I don't think I have ever renew my membership in a leap year but so far my membership expires on the same date every year. it hasn't changed so far.

Anna, thank you for taking time to reply and in detail.  I think what confuses me is perhaps I thought the year was through and including April 12th regardless of whether I renewed or not. As I am understanding now, my PBS membership year starts new on April 12th and next year ends on April 11th which means if I do not renew in 2020, April 10th would be my last day as a member. Lol, truly I was just curious, no biggie. I sincerely appreciate your taking time to reply!

Thank you Charles also. I may be one of the few people on here who waited to purchase membership when those first went into effect. I think the majority of PBS folks renew in either January or early February so would not be impacted by Leap Year.

If your membership ends on April 11th 2020, and you don't renew, then your last day as a member would be April 11th and not April 10th.

I thought that the OP was asking this:

  1. Current membership: Expires on the 12th. (So ... first day without a subscription is the 13th)
  2. Renews
  3. New membership: Expires on the 11th.

I would have expected that a year's renewal expired on the 12th of the next year, as well ... (renewing from the 13th to next year's 12th).

So, if the renewal is for ONE YEAR then her renewal should still expire on the 12th.

She DID lose a day. If I am understanding her correctly.

Robin, sounds like you agree I "lost" a day.

Sara, that is exactly what I was saying, thank you for putting it so clearly!

Editing to add I just received a reply from PBS. Here it is:

Thank you for writing back to us. We looked into this and found that, yes, due
to the leap year, your membership will be good through 4/11/2020, 356 days from
4/12/2019. (I know they meant 365)

We are sorry we did not get back to you sooner on this. It took a while for us
to figure it out, also.

So this means for 2021, I am guessing/hoping my membership will truly be through April 11th? We shall find out next April if/when I renew :)

All of the January and February renewers will be affected by this when we renew in 2020. I think shorting a day is pretty cheap, and it sounds like they may not have intended it to work that way. Hopefully they change it.

I’m sure it’ s in the coding and not an intentional attempt to mess with us.

I agree, Jeanne and think PBS was surprised by my telling them! It will be interesting if they choose to fix it. As long as next year, it is a full year, that's not so terrible.

It...may be more risky to try and fix the code than to just leave it be.  It's a pretty minor thing and I'd rather they work on other parts of the site. :)
