Extracts from "Diary." 1846 and 1847. The year 1846 was one of active labour, and much success. The Boys' School was completed and opened ; the work of Church restoration progressed with satisfaction ; on the other hand, my husband's health was evidently enfeebled by constant and active exertion, and necessity obliged him, from time to time, to give rest to mind and body. As was expressed in a sermon to be quoted hereafter, the frame was too weak for the spirit within; the lamp too earthy for the intense flame kindled from the Altar of God. During the course of this summer he made a short tour on the Continent. And after this brief rest he returned with vigour to his duties, and laboured afresh with love and energy amongst his people. 1846. "Jan. 1. -- O Lord, I will begin the year with rehearsing Thine own gracious promise, in the words which I am preparing to preach from next Sunday, ' When Thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee; when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.' Is. xliii. 2. In the name of Jesus Christ. " 3rd. -- Oh, how soon did I fall into sin after the beginning of the year, -- even yesterday and to-day. Alas !alas ! Most good Lord, pardon Thy most unworthy child, for the sake of his Advocate and Propitiation, Thy Son Jesus.
