THE following Memoirs, which I found amongst my family papers, were written by Admiral the Hon. John Forbes, and dedicated to George, sixth Earl of Granard, his grandnephew, and my grandfather; and I have been induced to publish them by the advice of those friends to whom I showed them, as well as from the belief that they contained matter of general interest, illustrating not only very stirring periods of Irish History, but also in a great measure throwing light upon the political and social phases and state of Europe, at the time when the persons whose lives are recorded existed; neither can I dispossess myself of the conviction that, in publishing these pages, I am carrying out the eventual intention of their writer. I have carefully adhered throughout, not only to the text, but also to the quaint spelling and phraseology of the Author, so that his manuscript appears in its integrity, amplified merely by some curious correspondence and other family documents, which form the Appendix to the Admiral's work; . and, in stating this, I cannot refrain from acknowledging the great obligation I am under to my friend, Sir Bernard Burke, Ulster King of Arms, for the valuable assistance and the judicious advice he has kindly given to me in the editing of these papers.
