Mix together cornstarch, water, sugar and salt. Cook until thick and clear. Let cool. Beat egg whites until frothy. Keep beating as you add cooled cooked mixture in with the egg whites. Beat for 5 minutes. When it makes stiff peaks, add vanilla. Beat about 1 more minute. Use over top of cream pies. Bake until golden brown. (If you let your egg whites sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes, they whip up better if they are not cold)
