If you are looking for constant action, continuous charges across no-man's-land and bloody hand-to-hand fighting in the trenches, this is not the novel for you.

However, this is a great novel of World War I and a battalion of British soldiers and their lives on the Western Front. It especially concentrates on a small group of men in Company A.

The novel deals with the efforts of the men to do their duty, while at the same time enjoying what life and pleasures they can obtain in the time they have. These men share with their friends what they have as tomorrow they may no longer have any use for their possessions. And when those friends die, a kind word or two may be spoken before they are forgotten and the struggle for life goes on.
