This author finds much humor in the Regency period, with her lighthearted view of their foibles. I think reading the prequel, The Pickpocket's Apprentice, is critical for understanding the officer who investigates this crime. John Pickett is only approaching his mid-twenties, and the ton does not think he's up to the task.
Although Lord and Lady Fieldhurst are at an impasse in their marriage because Lady Fieldhurst has not produced an heir, it seems unlikely that she killed her husband. When the Dowager Fieldhurst arrives and takes over, the reader immediately notices that the daughter and her mother-in-law dislike each other. Without an heir, the viscountcy passes to a cousin, who is deeply in debt due to his wife's spendthrift ways. Lord Fieldhurst was also a member of Parliament and the Foreign Office, as England and France were embroiled in a bitter conflict. Therefore, there are numerous potential distractions to uncover along the way.
This book is charming, and the plot moves at a brisk pace. It was a delight to read.
