SPIRITUAL AWAKENING. S travellers over high mountains become gifted with a further range of vision than they before possessed, and this by reason of the purer atmosphere they have entered, and the loftier ground they occupy, so it is with the man who has discarded Self and its objects. To him, like as befalls the Alpine ranger, all human things appear dwarfed to an almost petty minuteness, and he gazes without passion, though not without interest -- since he too is human, and his charity for his kind is great -- on what passes below him. Anon, as the daylight declines, the traveller, whether actual or moral, wearied with watching the human insects crawling over the face of the earth, in which all their happiness is centred, turns his gaze to the awful heavens above him, and reads there, in the dark blue vault, bright with burning constellations, a hope and a consolation never to be derived from what he has seen below him, speaking, as those heavens do, of a majesty, an eternity, a calm and holy strength, as immeasurably superior to all considerations drawn from the contemplation of earthly matters, as the heavens are higher than the earth.
