This book is the little girl with a curl in the middle of her forehead. When it is good, it is very, very good; but when it is bad, it is horrid. The great parts of this book are the narration, the storytelling itself, the imaginative word pictures, and just that some of the phrases are super beautiful. The science, the history-- just the intelligent parts of things shows it's obvious that this is a very intelligent author.

The parts that are horrid are the dialogue and the "love" scenes. They are absolutely terrible. Maggie, formally known as Margaret from the 17th century or something, sounds like a stereotypical pirate. The 17th c. guy version swallowed one of my mom's corset-busting romances from the 80's... it's horrible. I know that the author is trying to distinguish these people by their different areas that they're from and make their speech sort of fit, but it's really, really bad. This book is genius and stupid at the same time.

I was immediately taken aback by Gore's banter with his bridge. Not at all appropriate for a man from his time toward a woman, and not consistent with his (very inconsistent throughout) character. In fact, really, the whole idea of this is really weird⦠No professional organization would have the guy live in her home. So many inconsistencies... She says she's not supposed to let him out of her sight but never explains who is in charge when she's having a drink with friends, etc.

The every now and then side story insertion of racial issues was annoying and bumblingly done. It leant nothing to the story, in my opinion, other than to allow the author to make contradictory political statements.

Two stars off for language and illicit scenes. One star off for just being a really dumb too often.
