Riveting story about time travel. Thanks to everyone who mentioned this book on the paperbackswap forum. I never would have read it otherwise. This is one I would not have wanted to miss.

This is one of the best books I have ever read....it stayed with me forever...I lent my original copy to a friend and never got it back. I was thrilled when it was rereleased....a true keeper for me!

Well written and satisfying, the first part (Shay's life in Brandy's body) was by far the most interesting of the three sections. The last part -- Brandy in Shay's body -- really dragged during the time at the old coot's farm, and was less interesting because it was generally all taking place within a year. It picked up steam when the family started to belive the incredible tale in the diary though.

This is one of my all time favorite books. I have read it over & over. I once lent my copy to someone & never got it back. One day browsing a used book store I found it. I have never lent it out again! It's about a girl who travels back in time & lives as her grandmother. It's mostly about Shay's life as Brandy. You'll love this book if you like time travel type books

This book has stayed with me for years, I re-read it every once in awhile, the concept is grasping, a bride looks into a mirror and becomes the last bride who looked into it, anyone who loves time traveling will be sucked into this one. Especially, imagine what it would be like to actually have to stay there and live out another's life!

This was a good read, beautifully written with strong characters. My only gripe is that this book gets lumped into the horror genre and it is not, despite the marketing on the cover (1978 edition). It is a fantasy, a freaky-Friday type story about time travel.

One of my favorites that I've read 3 times over the years & highly recommend. Shay/Brandy delves into many fascinating areas of her life as she time travels back into her grandmothers body after looking into the "mirror".
How many of us have patiently listened to our ancestors rattle on & on about their past while only half listening? Imagine going back in time & reliving their lives, while trying to remember who was who and what had happened to them at what point in their lives along the way. All the while knowing we were trapped in their body & now had to live that life. This wonderful book makes you feel like you are right there! LOVE IT!

The Mirror had a unique plot in that it exchanged a woman and her grandmother, both on the eve of their marriage, both of them wanting to escape their environment. The mirror wasn't so kind to others who looked into it and that was one of the unanswered questions of the novel.

However in following the granddaughter back to take her grandmother's place and live out her life had it's intriguing moments, living out a past life.

I'm not sure what it is about this book -- the characters, the timeline, the detail -- but it's one of my favorite books ever. I read this back in the late 1970s when it first came out (the first hardcover edition) and loved it, but this updated version, released in 1997, is even better somehow. More questions are answered and a few anachronisms are corrected, but enough is left to the imagination to get the reader to suspend their disbelief altogether willingly. The flavor of the 1970s isn't lost at all in the update. This is far and away Millhiser's best novel. If you read only one, choose this one. You will not be disappointed.

I agree with some other reviewers who stated the beginning is best. I did not enjoy the end at all. I wish it could go the opposite direction because the way it ended had me glad it was over.

A chilling story of a haunted mirror and the havoc it wreaked in the lives of those who possessed it... and those yet to possess it.
