Comparisons between this book and "The Help" can't really be avoided, so let's just get that out of the way up front. Both books are set in The South during the civil rights era. Both books involve the friendship of a white women who were on the fringe of "society" with one (or more) black maids. Both books use those relationships to reveal/expose the prejudiced morals/values of the time. And both are very well written novels.

But that is where the similarities end. Now for the contrasts between the two books. I liked both books, but I think that Miss Hazel and the Rosa Parks League is grittier - and therefore more realistic. Whereas there were lighter/humorous moments in The Help, there are none this book. Miss Hazel and the Rosa Parks League is a story about two women who bond over similar tragic events that happen their lives. Fighting not to let the men in their lives control them. Fighting for their rights - including their civil right to vote. Miss Hazel and the Rosa Parks League is novel that takes itself more seriously -- with a lot more elements of drama and true pathos and danger.

So ... similar, but very different from The Help. And I might also add that I found the writing qualify to be excellent. Highly recommended.
