It was hot on July 22, 1976. Pretty vivacious Debbie Kline had just left work with her first paycheck in her pocket. She was a good girl, full of fun and life-never any trouble. And was always punctual arriving home from work, which normally took ten to fifteen minutes.
The Moyers' brand new home had burned down a few weeks earlier. So Mrs. Martin thought it strange that a car would be parked at such an odd angle, partially hidden from view. She called the police.
Dick and Jane Kline decided to drive Debbie's usual route in case she had some car problem or was in an accident and couldn't phone. As they passed the Moyer home, they saw Debbie's car just as the police arrived. Dick jammed the brakes and backed into the drive, and in an instant Jane was out of the car, shrieking, "That's Debbie's! Where is she?"
It was now nearly six months since Debbie disappeared. Most leads to her whereabouts had proven out empty and fruitless. Bob Cox and Ken Peiffer had become close to the Klines during their ordeal; still, Ken didn't quite know how they would react to his suggestion. He wasn't sure he believed it himself.
