Modern African American Literature: An Anthology of Curriculm Guides for Novels, Plays, Poetry and Comparison Studies
Modern African American Literature An Anthology of Curriculm Guides for Novels Plays Poetry and Comparison Studies Author:Joan Avioli, Wm Heyde, Dorothy Matlock, Gerald Early This unit has been designed to provide resources and materials to teachers. Unlike some curriculum of former decades in this century, it is not intended to be "teacher proof". Instead, it relies on teachers to take from it what is useful to them and to apply it in ways which are most appropriate to their students, In other words, it is intended... more » to empower teachers, not to dictate to them.
The authors hold that the study of literature involves, not the givign of answers, but the asking of questions after a careful textual analysis. The questions offered here should cause the readers to understand the words (both their denotative and connotative meanings). to comprehend the elements (the characters, setting, symbols, etc), to react crititcally and emotionally to them, and to establish connections between the characters and thier own lives. . . .
All works covered here are currently in print; the novels can be found in paperback edition and the short stories and poems are widely published in current anthologies.
