In âRaiders of the Lost Arkâ, Steven Spielberg inverted the typical thriller storytelling pattern. Instead of providing an introduction and back-story progressing into the action, he jumped right in with the action â not bothering with the introduction and back-story until the action heroes (and audience) needed a few minutes to catch their collective breaths.

In âMojave Rescueâ, author Tanya Stowe successfully uses the same technique. While working late into the evening after her colleagues have all gone home, electronics engineer Drina Gallagher has had a breakthrough on her weapons project. She calls her boss and wakes him up to let him know. Unfortunately, it seems some others have already realized that Drina was on the cusp of discovery, and want her notes â and their author. Meanwhile, base security expert Cal Norwood is about to stumble onto the scene â¦

The book is labeled âInspirationalâ; the protagonists often discuss their relationship or lack thereof with the Supreme Being. Fans of this format should find the faith-based discussions to their liking, while those indifferent will not be distracted by it. (Absolute haters will NOT like it, but they are unlikely to pick up the book in the first place.) I was pleased by a couple of the side-benefits of this subgenre; I didn't have to wade through erotic episodes that are occasionally inserted simply to attract other readers, AND it took me a long time to realize that even the antagonists weren't cursing â and I found I didn't miss EITHER the sex OR the language, thanks to Ms. Stowe's writing skills.

Recommended for all â except perhaps militant atheists who are offended by ANY mention of G-d.
RATING: Five Stars

p.s. It leaves me with an incredibly frustrated sensation when I manage to pick up a page-turner, but don't have time to read in anything other than short shifts. It's not Ms. Stowe's fault â she did HER part by writing a page-turner â¦
