He says, "Ye have laid up your treasures in the last day... more »s" (Jas. 5 : 3, R. V.). Not only is there, vast wealth in the world to-day, but that wealth is piled up, instead of scattered abroad. The few, instead of the many, have it. And in consequence thereof, the toilers cry out in discontent. The very laws of trade to-day center wealth with the few rather than the many. In the great cities, which are the centers of trade, we find the millionaires on one street and the beggars on the next. Suppose we grant that he has honestly obtained his millions, it still remains a fact that he has them. He has heaped up treasure. He has increased his wealth beyond the bounds of necessity. He not only has this treasure, but he is resolved to keepit and add to it. His wealth enables him to make more. Money makes money. He controls the market by buying up large quantities and holding them for increase. He gets a "corner" on wheat or pork, on beef or corn, and then adds millions to his heap, even though the extra cost takes bread out of the mouths of the starving. This increase was to be " in the last days " (R.V.). That our age has witnessed the most marvelous increase of wealth in the world's history is an indisputable fact. In 1720 the world's commerce was estimated at $440,000,000; in 1889 it was estimated at $16,885,000,000. In 1800 the'world's stock of gold and silver was reckoned at $4,489,- 000,000, and in 1880 it had increased to $14,675,- 000,000, or more than twice doubled in eighty years. $13,190,000,000 was obtained in one hundred and eighty years, or from 1700 to 1880.
