Monster in My Closet
Author: R. L. Naquin
Paranormal Romance - "I stopped believing in monsters long ago. But I knew I wasn't imagining thins when I found one in my kitchen baking muffins. I'd seen him before: lurking in my closet, scaring the crap out of my five-year-old self. Turns out that was a misunderstanding, and now Maurice needs a place to stay. How could I say no?

Zoey is an empath (she feels other's emotions). Until recently, she didn't know she was different (she's 28). Like 1st chapter of this book she finds out. Maurice, a closet monster, needs a place to stay so he moves in. I liked him as a character; a good cook & housekeeper, he was a friend that Zoey needed. One who understood her and her ability.
There is also an incubus running loose, and he really likes Zoey and the people she is connected to. Zoey realizes that she needs to learn to control her ability more (which she did pretty easily). She meets Andrews (he can read auras) and his familiar Mila (a fox). Then there are Molly and her kids (brownies). There's Iris (a skunk monster- I think I remember that right) and Riley (a Reaper).
Zoey's interactions with Riley the first couple of times they meet are funny (and a bit embarrassing).
A couple things bothered and/or really irritated me. Firstly, I would have thought Zoey would have caught on to what was really going on with Sara (common, a cold? really? When there is an incubus draining people you interacted with? Really? And it didn't occur to you that he MIGHT target your BFF (who is also her business partner)?). Secondly, her ex Brian. Why does she feel like she needs to continue helping, enabling, and responsible for him? Just cut him off already (they've been exes for 8 years, so it's not a recently ended relationship). He is a fucking adult. Let him figure his shit out and either succeed or fail. I just didn't get it and she was definitely a doormat where he was concerned.
On the fence about reading more in this series.
