The author efficiently recounts the events in a logical progression which keeps the reader wanting to know what happens next.

As someone close in age to Joan Johnson, it's difficult to comprehend why she would so readily succumb and surrender her own will to this narcistic controlling man. One can only feel pity for her, and heartbreak for the damage done to her children's psyche.
