Of the hundreds of Civil War books I've read this is one of the few I often think back on, and I read it many years ago. One thousand men in this regiment marched off to war in 1864. When the war was over, just one year later, only ten men in the regiment had not been wounded or killed. As wounded men recovered they returned to their unit. Often to get wounded again or killed.

It seemed like every place they went, they were in the thick of it. When the Army of Northern Virginia launched its last attack at Petersburg, Virginia, before it's final retreat in April 1865, it attacked Fort Stedman. Guess which regiment garrisoned that fort?

This is definitely a book every Civil War enthusiast should read.
