This book is well-written and engaging. Because this story is about a particular industry in a specific place (a bourbon distillery business in Kentucky), the reader learns something about the company and the state. In the opening chapter, KC Cleary, Master Distiller, dumps his latest girlfriend because an old love is returning to Kentucky. The woman takes it badly and smashes her Jaguar into his Mercedes (as a token of her ill will). Soon, Mr. Cleary turns up dead.

When Honey Howell arrives back in Kentucky, she's surprised that KC hasn't called. Instead, the chief of police and the new detective (Hap Nelson and Sam Gentry) arrive at her door, hoping to borrow Honey's dog, Elvis. Elvis, the bloodhound, is a local hero for finding a lost child. So now, they want to see if Elvis can help the police get a line on the missing KC. Elvis is a hoot. He wants to dance with his owner every time an Elvis tune plays. He slobbers and drools unmercifully, but he has a heart of gold. So naturally, Elvis will be integral to the solving of the crimes.

After finishing all of Scarlett Dunn's historical fiction (please write faster), I had to move to her contemporary novels. Surprisingly, it was an effortless transfer. This story is a page-turner from the beginning. Overall score = 4.5 stars.
