A young man's body is found in the tomb of a medieval knight. Parish Constable Haze is called to his first murder in the shire. The only other newcomer to the village is Captain Jason Redmond, there to receive his inheritance. He takes on the title of Lord Redmond.

Captain Redmond, at loose ends after the end of the American Civil War, appreciates being asked by Constable Haze to look at the body of the young man and give him some idea how the young man died -- and anything else that might help him to solve the crime.

Essentially, this is a crime with no motive, no suspects, and no idea why the man was in the village.
